Design your kitchen island How much space do you need?

A kitchen island, although it takes up a lot of space, is a great place to cook, prepare food, expand your storage space or use it as an office. That's why more and more people are choosing, or at least considering, adding one to their kitchen. But while a well-designed island will allow you a smooth workflow that will make you enjoy your kitchen tasks, a poorly designed island can be very frustrating and you may end up regretting your decision.

If you have in mind to put an island in your kitchen, read carefully and follow these tips that will help you know whether or not you have enough space for your island to be functional and practical. And if not, discover other equally interesting options.

1- Define the main function of your kitchen island. Before you start thinking about the details that will make up your new island, it is important that you are clear about the function for which it will be used. It is not the same to use it as a breakfast bar or to eat something quick and informal and where you should give priority to the seating area, than to use it as a cooking or cleaning area where you will need to have more space to place the stove, sink or appliances.

2- Minimum dimensions. The dimensions of your kitchen island will depend mainly on the use you want to make of it on a daily basis although it is advisable, for the island to be practical, that the surface of the countertop is not less than 100 cm X 100 cm for small kitchens, although if you opt for more elongated models, the minimum width can be 60 cm which still allows enough space to work the food.

3- Passage areas. For an island to be comfortable, you have to leave at least 90 cm free around it. This will not only allow you to work in the kitchen in a relaxed way, but it is also the right distance to be able to open doors, drawers, appliances and cabinets located on opposite sides simultaneously and with total guarantee.

4-Integrate the island to your kitchen and not the other way around. In your design you have to keep in mind that the island is not an isolated solution, but part of a larger design that is the kitchen and therefore it is important to meditate carefully on how it will fit what we have in mind for it with the distribution of the rest of the kitchen.
