By reducing noise in the windows can it benefit you?

If we have a noise problem inside our home, in most cases, the most effective way to combat it is by having windows installed with good acoustic behavior. The incidence of noise is not only unpleasant but also depending on its intensity and the duration of it can adversely affect people's health.

Noises from the outside are transmitted through the different elements of the building envelope. Both the wall of the house and the windows are the elements that must isolate us from outside air noise.

The replacement of the windows that we have with acoustic insulating windows is an easy, fast solution, in which we do not have to make a high investment. In most cases, windows not adequate to the acoustic needs of the home are precisely the main factor in acoustic insulation problems in our home.

On the other hand, for a reform and improvement of the acoustic insulation of the facade wall, we will be looking at a not very simple work and with a considerable budget. This will depend on the built surface and also on the selected qualities and materials. Improving the acoustic insulation of the wall is a solution whose improvement will not be as significant as the improvement of the windows. There would be no point in improving the acoustic insulation of the wall, without also making it for the windows. Windows are the weakest element of the façade and if they do not behave adequately against air noise, we will undoubtedly have a house with acoustic problems.

To find out if our current windows have good sound insulation, we must look at the type of window. If we have a sliding scale, we have a bad solution against noise since these windows use a system of wheels to move around and brushes that offer very low acoustic insulation since they allow air leaks and also noise. Even if we have a window, practicable, we must check if the insulation joints are in good condition and if the closure is around the perimeter. If we notice small air inlets through our windows, we are facing a clear symptom of windows with an acoustic problem.

It is also important that the system as a whole has a good closing pressure that will give us if we have good fittings with an adequate fit.

And finally, glass. Surely the safest thing is that we do not have acoustic glass installed on our windows. Although we have double glass, this glass can be a good thermal insulator but it will not be a good acoustic insulator unless it has considerable thicknesses on both windows and preferably windows of different thicknesses.

For a window to be effective in its acoustic attenuation, it must have a high air impermeability value. That is, it does not allow air leaks. Any air leakage that the window has, will mean a strong drop in sound insulation.
